Bringing IU to the world, and the world to IU

Farther and in more directions, IU Bloomington continues to expand its global connectedness. International studies and programs have been a trademark of our campus for more than 50 years.

Our global activities and initiatives include recruiting and supporting international faculty and students, collaborative research with overseas scholars, international arts outreach, dual degree programs and partnerships with many countries, visits from foreign dignitaries, study abroad opportunities, and growing our international alumni networks.

Global research and philanthropy

The IU School of Global and International Studies and the IU College of Arts and Sciences offer 17 area studies centers for specific countries and regions of the world—such as Africa, Asia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, Russia, and the Middle East. Supported by faculty with deep knowledge in these regions, the centers provide rare expertise-training in advanced research skills, cultural understanding, historical perspectives, and foreign language competency needed for work and life in global environments.

IU researchers collaborate on countless projects with international partners—often through philanthropic ventures in public health and human rights. The OVPIA Office of International Development pursues and manages externally funded grants for programs that empower IU faculty, students, and staff to improve the lives of people worldwide. Current projects include the Liberia Center for Excellence in Health and Life Sciences and the Higher Education Leadership and Management (HELM) project in Indonesia.

Alumni chapters on every continent

More than 13,000 IU alumni live all over the world—with international chapters on all continents. Wherever they are, IU alumni can look to fellow alumni for local information, social and cultural events, and career assistance.
